As Werner says, “Everything fails, all the time”. And working in IT is the best way to learn the lesson, isn’t it? You now have two different possibilities: Resign yourself (and wait for it…); Read further and learn more about Disaster Recovery. We found that there are more misconceptions and myths about Disaster Recovery then we thought, so we decided to ask our great mythbuster team to help us debunk them. Let’s start with: 1 “My business is still growing, I don’t need a Disaster Recovery solution yet. Moreover, I already do backups regularly” It’s not a matter of how big your infrastructure is. It’s all about how critical data stored in it are. And there is more: the fewer resources you use in your infrastructure, the more critical they are. If a disaster occurs, your small business goes down and all your resources become temporarily unavailable, then customers’ requests can’t be satisfied at all. A bad user experience is the best way to say “goodbye” to your users. Keep in mind that doing backups is only the first step to grant Business Continuity. A complete solution should include a plan for failover and failback, which ensures access to your data and apps, never mind how disruptive the disaster hitting your business is. 2 “Cloud Computing is secure in itself. My provider will take care of everything” Well, Cloud providers are not responsible for your data: Cloud providers are responsible for security OF the Cloud. In particular, they take care of their global infrastructure and foundation services, but not of what you store. So, who really cares about your data security? Security and compliance IN the Cloud are under YOUR control. So… it’s up to you to decide whether to roll up your sleeves and to do it yourself with your Cloud Provider tools or to let us take the burden off your shoulders 😉 3 “It’s not worth investing such a great amount of money in a Disaster Recovery Plan” At a first sight, using individual building blocks seems to be cheaper and to assure a higher customization level of your DR plan. Customization, however, is something difficult to handle in a situation where speed, readiness, and expertise are required. Customization and complexity are two sides of the same coin and it’s easy to mix them up without realizing that… till something really goes wrong. In case of a disaster, the risk of spending all that you’ve saved while not investing in DR is something to deal with. 4 “If you want something done, do it yourself “ A “Do-It-Yourself” Disaster Recovery solution is usually fragmented; building blocks and services are not always integrated with each other. For this reason, it requires a great amount of human interaction and control and it doesn’t always ensure infrastructure availability. Moreover, it is expensive both in terms of money and in terms of time. On the other hand, an automated, preconfigured, Disaster Recovery plan protects your business from downtime by restoring automatically and with a single click, your infrastructure service-level without any human interaction required. And it only takes the time to read this paragraph to get things done 🙂 This is only a brief sample of myths and bad belief we face in our everyday life. Our job is to debunk them, to increase awareness among IT people… and to save them some headaches 🙂 …Feeling floored? Noovolari Smart Backup is here to help!
